Guide to Buying Used Diesel Saloons & Hatchbacks

 Most of these diesel
saloon & hatchback
vehicles come in 3 or 5 door variations. Small
diesel hatchbacks such as the Peugeot 206, Vauxhall Corsa,
Renault Clio and Citroen C2 and C3 are ideal for first time
drivers. They have very low insurance groups, typically around
group 3 and are also very popular with driving schools. Mostly
3 door variants.
The next size up includes the Peugeot 307, Ford Focus, Renault
Megane and Citroen C4 – also very popular with the national
driving schools such as the AA and BSM. This intermediate
size diesel car makes the perfect family runabout, cheaper
to run than petrol and the later cars are cheaper to tax.
Do you need a lot of boot/ luggage space, the Rover 75 and VW
Passat have large boot capacities.
Most mainstream manufacturers now supply their diesel
saloons and hatchbacks with
rear split seats for added carrying capacity. Skoda Octavia Superb
offers “limousine” leg room in the back, much more
than other makes in its class.
There is a steady increase in the manufacturers supplying diesel
vehicles with 6 speed, tiptronic and automatic transmission,
such as the Volkswagen, Audi, Renault, Mercedes and BMW. For
the more sporty types, how about a Peugeot 206 DT Hdi or VW
Polo GT Tdi – small, very sporty and fun to drive.
For more thrills how about an Audi A3, VW Golf GTI, Alfa Romeo
145 with bhp’s available up to 170bhp! Sports car performance
and very thrifty.
Now the larger luxurious
diesel cars, Saab, Mercedes, Jaguar, BMW, Renault Velsatis
all come equipped to be driven by company managers, directors,
luxury vehicle hire companies or the people who want to drive
a nice car. When these diesel
vehicles are a couple of years old, they generally represent
excellent value for money and you can generally pick up a large
Mercedes or Jaguar for the price of a Mondeo or Vectra.
